ECI 544 Remediation of Reading Disabilities
In this course, I learned how to assess and provide individual instruction for reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing. Also, this course taught me about the seven rules of engagement to keep students' motivation levels high. Since learning these concepts, I applied the rules of engagement to the technology lessons I use in my classroom.
The following is a list of ways that I used technology in the classroom to support the literacy concepts learned in this class:
Common Core Connections:
- Flip Camera: In order to build reading fluency, I recorded groups of students reading different poems. Once they listened to themselves reading, it motivated them to continue re-reading their poems in order to build fluency.
- iPad: I recorded our Reader's Theater performances using my iPad in order for students to have the opportunity to hear themselves reading. This activity also helped build reading fluency within my classroom.
- Audacity: During Daily 5, students were given the choice to record their texts using the program audacity in order to build reading fluency.
- Listening Station: I took my favorite books and recorded myself reading them. During Daily 5 students are able to build an understanding of prosody by listening to my expression and rate while reading.
- Research: This course emphasized the importance of integrating informal texts. I taught my students how to use google to research additional facts about a topic after reading a text.
- Voki: To give my students a sense of ownership, I taught them how to record their personal narratives using Voki. My students also created a Voki to share their speeches on "Why they'd make a good president." This activity also helped them with reading fluency.
- Text2MindMap: In order to help students activate prior knowledge, we create an online graphic organizer using Text2MindMap and then uploaded it on the class website.
- StorylineOnline: During our literacy block, students can listen to read-alouds on this website which helps them understand reading with expression.
