ECI 545 Theory and Research in Literacy
This course focused on literacy theories, the Common Core and it's new shifts, and text complexity. From this course I learned many web 2.0 tools that can be used as graphic organizers to help students comprehend complex texts. This course also emphasized the research behind inquiry learning and allowing students to collaborate together. Becoming familiar with the research based theories of literacy has allowed me to create more effective lesson plans and better reach my struggling readers. I learned the importance of asking text based questions and scaffolding lessons to target my students individual needs.
This is a list of ideas and tools that I explored in my own classroom due to this course:
Wordle: This site allows students to generate a list of words they associate with a certain topic in order to activate prior knowledge before reading a complex text. I have had students use this tool to type in their spelling words, create a list of synonyms, and add words related to their research topic.
Text2MindMap: This is an online graphic organizer that allows students to color coordinate different words or concepts to build prior knowledge.
ReadWriteThink: This website has a large variety of different interactive graphic organizers that students can complete before, during, or after reading a complex text.
Reading A-Z: This website organizes texts by level, concept, or Common Core standard.

These are the projects that I completed during this course. I became much more familiar with how to embed video's into my power points.
